It is our great pleasure to welcome you to Suburban Knits, a new design partnership between Holly Barcelo and Lars Rains. Holly is well known for the many patterns that she shared with the readers of her previous blog, “Hook and Needle Girl.” Lars also had a devoted audience who appreciated his wry turn of phrase and his unique perspective on contemporary culture as represented by his prior blog, “Does a Bear Knit in the Woods?” Together, we will be combining forces to present an informative, yet highly entertaining blog that will focus on three facets of knitwear design.
Industry Trends
In order to remain relevant in the continually evolving world of fashion, a knitwear designer must be aware of the latest trends and the newest techniques. We intend to share this research with our readers by reviewing the most recent books and magazines, with a special attention paid to historical traditions. In addition, we plan on attending as many knitting conferences and events as possible, so that we can keep you informed of the many exciting developments taking place around the world.
Lessons and Guides
We also feel that it is extremely important to educate the next generation of knitters. We will be exploring various stitch patterns and knitting techniques on the pages of this blog. By presenting step-by-step instructions, close-up photographs that illustrate each procedure, and the occasional pattern that demonstrates how to incorporate this new information into a project, we are looking forward to sharing our acquired knowledge with those just starting out on their own personal knitting adventures.
Custom Designs
Of course, as a knitting blog devoted to design, we will be sharing our most current projects with you. Holly specializes in creating new patterns for accessories, fitted garments and shawls. Her academic interests include knitted Victorian ephemera and the pragmatics of knitting during the American Civil War. Lars is an acknowledged expert in creating innovative sweater designs for men and he enjoys experimenting with traditional sock and mitten techniques. A proud Scandinavian, he is also most interested in studying historical Norwegian and Icelandic knitting traditions, as well as reading cultural critiques that recognize knitting as a fine art.
